Have you played with Google Labs’ Ngram Viewer? It’s an addicting tool that lets you search for words and ideas in a database of 5 million books from across centuries. Erez Lieberman Aiden and Jean-Baptiste Michel show us how it works, and a few of the surprising things we can learn from 500 billion words.
My coworker sent me this link, she had to watch it for a grad school class, but it is so amazing! I defiantly nerded out watching this. I think the fact that Google has digitized so many books it amazing to start with, but how they extrapolate information from those books, and find trends over history – it’s so cool!
And I mean, how adorable is Jean-Baptiste. And the fact that these two find a way to make this so entertaining is great, if more people did this I feel like there would be a lot more people interested in history and science. And I mean, there is a shout out to authors – we will be more famous than actors!
